Six months into the global pandemic, we are all struggling to create a “new normal.” This is a great opportunity to take a look back at lessons learned and apply them to today’s business environment. There is now doubt that the tumultuous times we are facing are ripe with opportunity. Agile CEOs responded to the coronavirus pandemic by pivoting to thriving arenas like personal protective equipment (PPE) and video conferencing. They molded circumstances to their benefit and you can, too. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Digital is King

2020 has demonstrated that the technology at our disposal is already sophisticated enough to facilitate remote work, even if it isn’t always perfectly smooth sailing. The message is clear: for most office-based industries, digital interactions and resources are the only way forward.

Versatile online platforms have been the key. Coupled with guidelines we have established through trial and error over the past few months, they give us the ability to operate and manage teams in isolation. Cloud-based systems that were previously an attractive option are virtually indispensable now.

Give your team the training and support they need to quickly adopt and familiarize themselves with the digital tools at their disposal. Be an early adopter yourself, always looking ahead to nascent tech and platforms to evaluate their utility and fit for your organization.

Reinvest Liquidity

The impetus to invest in cloud-based solutions is sometimes stifled by cost considerations. Overcome resistance by viewing this expenditure as an investment in your long-term success.

Some organizations may be able to accommodate this growth by downsizing actual office space. The savings in rent and associated spending will give you more liquidity than otherwise would have been possible. Don’t simply sit on the cash but reroute it to the instruments that can give you an edge in these circumstances.

Speed is essential and technology delivers almost inevitably accelerates time to market. Even minute advantages in customer service and delivery can elevate your company above the crowded and competitive throng.

People Power

Your team is currently bearing the brunt of the pandemic-induced downturn but the right overtures today have the potential to create lifelong loyalty.

Your first responsibility is to keep everyone safe. Social distancing measures, detection and isolation procedures, and a robust sanitization routine are absolutely crucial at all physical premises. If you are in the unfortunate position of having to furlough workers, why not retain them as casual team members for now?

Evidence shows that mental health is an increasingly widespread issue among remote workers. Bring up the issue in company newsletters and online meetings. Encourage your team to speak up and seek help if they need it.

There is no better and more reliable employee, client, or customer than one who believes in your mission and your good intentions. The people factor never goes out of fashion — don’t squander this opportunity.
