There comes a point (sometimes more than one) in every business leader’s journey where he or she hits the wall. Professional progress plateaus, personal happiness plummets, and waking up every day to do more of the same becomes a very unappealing prospect. The role of a business coach is to lift you out of that rut, to offer insight on how to maintain an upward trajectory, and to reprogram you for long-term success. Here are some things to consider when thinking about working with a business coach to help define a path to fulfillment.

  1. The best results manifest when the coach and the client are a good fit for each other. Responsible coaches know their own strengths and weaknesses and understand that they cannot help everyone with everything.
  2. Industry Experience. Many business leaders come across the name of a business coach when networking with members of their industry. If the coach has repeatedly had success with professionals from your field, it is an indication that he or she understands the common pitfalls and the strategies that can be employed to hurdle them.
  3. Define Success. Success means different things to each of us. You have to establish together with your coach the criteria for success you want to achieve.
  4. Ask your coach about the lessons that they have learned along their own journey and how that knowledge applies to your situation. This collaborative approach infuses your relationship with the perspective that will help you both.
  5. Straight Talk. One of the hardest things we have to contend with as individuals is the minefield of emotions that surround every relationship. In our personal lives, it complicates matters; in the case of a business coach, it can derail your progress. Open yourself up to criticism and accept that not everything your coach tells you will make for great listening. However, your investment of time and money will only pay off if you are willing to hear what they say. Make that commitment and practice it.
  6. Pushing Boundaries. Almost every brick wall we face is the product of a fear of failure. A business coach will probably tell you that very early in your relationship, but they will also give you the insight that will enable you to break through. When self-motivation is not enough, a slight push in the right direction from someone you trust can help unlock the floodgates to success. Allow yourself to be pushed.
