Often times, when business leaders are faced with difficult decisions, they look within themselves and the company for answers. However, more often than not, the best answers come from outside the current paradigm. In fact, building a network of outside perspectives can lead to incredible business results. Here are some tips on how business leaders can develop their own network of advisors.

Bottom-Up Input

Many leaders are comfortable with a top-down culture because it allows them to maintain good oversight and align the organization with their personal vision. Unfortunately, this approach locks them out of invaluable insight from junior team members who often have the best understanding of the detailed workings of the company. These workers are often reluctant to offer that insight because of a fear of repercussions for raising uncomfortable truths. The onus lies on the leader to foster an environment where they are comfortable giving their input without fear.

Leverage the Industry

It is understandable that many leaders are apprehensive about raising internal issues with people not from their own company. This hurdle can be overcome by developing a network of industry trusted industry connections with whom to share such problems. Establishing and nurturing such relationships is far easier today than ever before. Platforms like LinkedIn give you immediate access to industry leaders from across the world. Participation is very rewarding and gives you the opportunity to highlight your own talents.

Cast a Wide Net

While a business leader’s instinct might be to turn to their industry-industry network, they shouldn’t underestimate the potential of insight from leaders from other sectors. Issues around factors like management, leadership, and strategy are universal. Social media offers some of the best opportunities to meet individuals who can offer perceptive solutions to the complications faced. Also, consultants often work across industry lines and with companies of varying sizes. This gives them an unmatched capacity for piercing insight and creative strategies.

Take the Leap

Many leaders tend to shy away from soliciting assistance. Those who manage to overcome this aversion to different perspectives give their companies – and themselves – opportunities for advancement and growth that would otherwise not be possible.

Reach Out

A volunteer activity, such as joining a board of directors or leading a philanthropic organization, are great ways to reach out, seek advice, and learn from others. In general, volunteer opportunities are friendly and low-pressure, which means leaders can engage in genuine conversations with people who hold similar interest and values. (See my previous blog post titled Giving Back to Your Community for more insight into the value of volunteering.)

By implementing the techniques mentioned above to create a personal “board of directors,” business leaders gain unique perspectives into their decision-making process. If successful, it will help drive a business leader’s ability to bring people and concepts together for mutual success.
