It is almost 2017.

Do you have a list of business New Year’s Resolutions? No, not yet.  That’s okay . . . here are several of my favorite tips for setting, sticking to, and evaluating company growth resolutions for 2017.

  1. Setting New Year’s Resolutions

The first question to ask is “where do I want my company to be this time next year?” Do you want to expand your company regionally? Do you want to break into new markets or offer a new product?  Sit down and brainstorm; this is the time you can daydream about what you would like your company to achieve.

Next, using a calendar, plan how you can achieve these goals in the new year. Put specific projects and tasks on the calendar. Be realistic . . . it may take six months to complete the market research for a new product so you may not be able to introduce it for another year. It is okay if your 2017 resolutions spread into 2018 – you can begin planning your 2018 resolutions as well.

  1. Sticking to the Resolutions

We all know that News Year’s Resolutions are easy to break. But don’t give up on your business resolutions and, more importantly, don’t make excuses. Once you identify a specific goal for your business’ growth, it will take time for it to become institutionalized. Remember, it takes 20 to 30 days for a behavior to become a habit. This applies to your business also.

Then, looking back at your 2017 resolutions calendar, begin breaking the big goals into smaller responsibilities. Make sure that you can identify individual tasks and make them executable. Steps for each should be broken down and implemented monthly, weekly, and daily.

  1. Evaluating Your Resolutions

After you begin implementing your business resolutions for 2017, go back and reevaluate. Quarterly evaluations will allow you to see what is working and what isn’t. Be realistic and don’t be afraid to reset goals for the year. It is never too late to be successful!

Also, don’t hesitate to ask for outside guidance. Talking with a business coach is a great tool to make sure you are implementing your 2017 business plan.
